The most recent legislative session gave Texas families the opportunity to have a choice in their child’s education. As you will see, families overwhelmingly are in support of this new program, posting a staggering number of applications.
When the Texas Education Freedom Account (TEFA) program launched earlier this year, the response was immediate and overwhelming. On day one alone, more than 42,000 students applied, setting a national record for a new program rollout.Â
But that was just the beginning.
Within two weeks, applications surged past 100,000, already matching the program’s initial capacity. And by the time the deadline approached, the numbers had exploded even further; over 200,000 students applied, more than double the roughly 90,000 spots available in the first year.Â
Even more recent estimates suggest the total number of applicants may have climbed to over 270,000 students statewide, underscoring just how strong the demand truly is.Â
In just a matter of weeks, families across Texas, from Houston to Dallas to rural communities, have made it clear they want more control over their children’s education. The speed and scale of these applications are not normal; they are historic.
According to early data, many of these applicants are young families with children just entering school, showing that parents are thinking long-term about their children’s futures.Â
Here’s the problem: the program’s success has exposed just how limited it is.
The Texas Legislature funded TEFA at about $1 billion, enough for roughly 90,000 students, but demand has already more than doubled, and possibly tripled that capacity.Â
This is no longer a debate about whether school choice is needed. The numbers have settled that question. This is now a question of whether Texas leadership will rise to meet the moment and consider expanding the school choice program moving forward.
There is one issue that seems to be a cause for concern. Many sources have uncovered Islamic charter schools as eligible to receive these funds. Considering the concerted effort to bring Sharia Law into Texas, this is a big problem. Many of these schools have ties to foreign terrorist organizations like the Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR. They should be automatically denied from receiving these funds! We will see how these concerns play out over the coming months and will update when more information is available.
Overall, the school choice program is proving to be a much needed improvement to our education system. School choice creates competition and gives families the options they deserve. Education is not one size fits all, and over one quarter million applications prove just that.
