A Texas family is mourning the loss of an unborn child after prosecutors say a Montgomery County man secretly administered abortion medication to a pregnant woman without her knowledge or consent. This case could become one of the most significant pro-life criminal prosecutions in recent Texas history.

According to investigators, 25-year-old Jon Rueben Gabriel Demeter has been indicted on felony charges, including performing an abortion and injury to a child. Authorities say he covertly mixed abortion-inducing medication into a drink given to the mother of his unborn child. Prosecutors allege the act directly caused the death of the 14-week-old baby girl, whom the mother named Presley Mae.

Authorities say the mother had every intention of carrying her child to term. Investigators revealed that Demeter allegedly pressured her to obtain an abortion and even offered to pay for her to travel out of state for the procedure. When she refused, prosecutors say he took matters into his own hands by secretly obtaining abortion medication online and administering it without her consent.

The woman reportedly began suffering severe symptoms shortly after consuming the drink while visiting Demeter’s apartment in The Woodlands. She later delivered the stillborn child at a medical facility. Sheriff Wesley Doolittle described the unborn baby as a fully developing child with “10 fingers and 10 toes” and vowed Montgomery County authorities would pursue justice aggressively.

It is disturbing to know that abortion drugs were weaponized against both the mother and her child, especially without consent. Furthermore, abortion pills for a preborn baby at 14 weeks is not only lethal to the child, but extremely late, and therefore dangerous, for the mother. This was not healthcare. Prosecutors allege this was violence against a woman and violence against an unborn baby.

Texas has worked diligently in recent years to strengthen protections for unborn children and defend the sanctity of life. State leaders, including Ken Paxton, have consistently defended Texas’ pro-life laws against legal and political attacks. Cases like this demonstrate why those protections matter.

Montgomery County District Attorney Mike Holley stated this may be the first prosecution of its kind under Texas abortion statutes. If true, the case could establish a major legal precedent for how abortion-inducing drugs used outside lawful medical exemptions are prosecuted in Texas courts.

Texas Family Project believes every child, born and unborn, deserves protection under the law. Presley Mae was not simply a “pregnancy.” She was a baby girl with a future ahead of her. Her life mattered.

Texas must continue to advance pro-life legislation that helps get rid of every abortion. Despite Texas being a pro-life state, there are still gaps and loopholes that need to be filled. We will continue to help pro-life legislation get through the Texas legislature.

As this case proceeds through the courts, Texans should remember strong pro-life laws exist for a reason: to protect innocent babies and their mothers while holding accountable those who seek to destroy it.
