Texas is a state built on the rule of law, religious liberty, and the principle that no foreign religious legal system stands above the Constitution.
That is why the latest developments at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport should concern Texans.
DFW Airport is planning to install two new Islamic ritual foot-washing, or wudu, stations in Terminal D restrooms. According to reporting, the approximately $300,000 project is privately funded and is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. The stated purpose is to provide Muslim travelers with a dedicated place to perform ritual washing before prayer while preventing water from being splashed onto restroom floors and counters.
DFW Airport already operates “interfaith chapels” throughout its terminals. In 2019, the airport announced its renovated Terminal D Interfaith Chapel included two ablution stations adjacent to the chapel for ritual purification. The airport also noted the Terminal D chapel hosts Friday “Juma prayer” services.
There is another issue Texans cannot ignore.
Texas Family Project has consistently opposed efforts to introduce foreign religious law into our legal system. Sharia law does not supersede the Texas Constitution, Texas statutes, or the Constitution of the United States.
And this distinction has become particularly important in 2026.
Attorney General Ken Paxton recently launched an investigation into a Dallas-based organization calling itself the Islamic Tribunal after allegations it was attempting to operate as a religious court and claiming authority over disputes involving Muslims. Paxton's office specifically stated religious organizations cannot operate as courts, apply foreign laws which conflict with Texas or federal law, or claim governmental authority.
Governor Greg Abbott has likewise called for investigations into entities allegedly masquerading as legal courts and attempting to enforce Sharia law in Texas.
The reported project is privately funded, which is an important fact. But private funding does not eliminate the public's legitimate interest in understanding what is being built on airport property and why.
America is a nation governed by the Constitution, not by Sharia law. Our nation's strength comes from the fact that the same law applies to everyone. We will not Sharia our Texas.
