In a major win for parental rights and education freedom, the Texas House has passed Senate Bill 2, a long-awaited school choice initiative that will finally give thousands of Texas families the ability to choose the best educational path for their children. The bill, which faced over 10 hours of fierce debate, passed thanks to the unified support of nearly every Republican in the House—with the unfortunate yet expected exceptions of former Speaker Dade Phelan and Representative Gary Vandeaver, who broke ranks and sided, effectively, with the Democrat opposition.
Every single Democrat voted no, which sadly comes as no surprise. The Left continues to fight tooth and nail against empowering parents, preferring instead to prop up failing public school bureaucracies and the powerful teachers’ unions that fund their campaigns. Their opposition isn’t about what’s best for the child—it’s about maintaining control.
SB 2 is a game changer. Roughly 100,000 Texas families will now have access to education savings accounts (ESAs), allowing them to pursue alternatives to the one-size-fits-all public school system. Whether it's a private Christian school, homeschooling, or a charter school that better suits a child’s needs, parents are finally being given the tools to take charge of their child’s education.
It’s a simple principle: Parents, not the government, know what’s best for their kids. The passage of SB 2 affirms that truth and puts Texas on the map as a leader in the fight for educational freedom.
Let this be a message to the Phelans and Vandeavers of the world: Texans are watching. We expect our representatives to stand up for our children, not cave to political pressure or liberal talking points. And to the Democrats who stood unanimously against this bill, it’s time to wake up—parents are tired of being ignored.
The passage of Senate Bill 2 is more than just a legislative win—it’s a victory for conservative values, parental rights, and most importantly, for the future of Texas children. Let’s keep fighting until every family in Texas has the freedom to choose the education that aligns with their values and meets their child’s needs.
