Now that the election is over, we are focused on the upcoming Texas Legislative Session! The Texas Legislature meets for 5 months every other year. In 2025, our elected officials will come together in January to begin the session to pass bills that will become laws to govern our state.
Bill filing began on November 12, about two months before the session kicked off. There have already been hundreds of bills filed in the Texas House and Texas Senate. We’re pleased to see many of the TFP priorities have already begun the long process of becoming law!
Governor Greg Abbott and Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick have both stated that school choice is one of their top priorities for the upcoming session. This is one of TFP’s priorities as well.
Representative Briscoe Cain filed House Bill 212 (HB 212), a school choice bill that would allow for the dollars to follow the student. So if parents decide to move their kids from the local government school to private or homeschool, they can apply for reimbursement of 80% of their tax dollars spent on the government schools their children are no longer using. This also means private schools would not be subject to state regulation including regulation of religious studies or programs.
Representative Brian Harrison also filed a bill in line with another TFP priority. House Bill 847 (HB 847) would ban taxpayer dollars from being used for gender reassignment practices. In 2023, a bill was passed to ban these evil operations on children, but many government employee health insurance plans (paid for by taxpayers) still cover genital mutilation surgeries. Texans have the right to ensure their tax dollars are not being used to fund grotesque practices.
Representative Nate Schatzline filed a bill to ban drag shows when minors are present in the state of Texas. This bill would be enforced with civil liabilities to ensure Texans like you can enforce this law. House Bill 1075 (HB 1075) is similar to a bill passed last session. Unfortunately, a radical activist judge struck the law down and we are still waiting to see what happens in the appeals process. The language in HB 1075, Schatzline’s bill for 2025, has been updated to withstand challenges in the federal courts.
