Texas families have been sounding the alarm for years: taxpayer-funded universities have drifted away from their core mission and toward ideological activism. Now, the Texas Tech University System is taking a meaningful step to correct course, and it’s a move worth recognizing!

Under the leadership of Chancellor Brandon Creighton, a former pro-family champion while serving in the Texas Senate, Texas Tech has announced it will phase out academic programs centered on sexual orientation and gender identity. The system will no longer offer degrees or credentials in these areas while allowing currently enrolled students to complete their studies.

This is not a minor policy adjustment, it is a structural shift. The directive includes freezing admissions for affected programs, reviewing course content, and removing these topics from core undergraduate curriculum.

Ending Gender Ideology in the Classroom

For too long, many public universities have prioritized controversial social theories over academic rigor and workforce preparation. Texas Tech’s policy directly addresses that concern.

The memo makes clear that courses at the foundational level will no longer center on these topics, and faculty are required to treat biological sex as a fixed reality rather than a fluid concept.

Programs specifically focused on gender and sexuality studies are being phased out entirely, with universities directed to identify and eliminate majors, minors, and certificates built around those themes.

At its core, this reform is about restoring focus, ensuring publicly funded institutions are teaching students skills and knowledge to prepare them for real-world success, not ideological activism.

Public institutions funded by hardworking Texans should reflect the values of objectivity, merit, and truth, not promote divisive or unproven ideological frameworks.

We appreciate Chancellor Creighton’s leadership in taking this issue seriously and following through with decisive action. His willingness to confront entrenched systems sends a clear message: Texas will not allow taxpayer dollars to be used for ideological indoctrination.

The Work Is Not Finished

While this is a strong step forward, it is just the beginning.

Policies on paper must translate into real change in the classroom. As we’ve seen in other cases across Texas, institutions sometimes attempt to rebrand or quietly continue the same practices under different names. Oversight and enforcement will be critical moving forward.

This is how we restore trust in our universities, and ensure that the next generation is equipped for success, not confusion.

TFP is on the front lines for Texas families, as the Left continues waging their anti-family war, and will not back down.
