Texas’ New Comptroller Puts Families First

Recent comments from Texas Comptroller Don Huffines highlight an issue that deserves far more attention from policymakers, churches, communities, and families across the Lone Star State: Texas needs fathers who are present, responsible, engaged, and committed to leading and providing for their families.

Huffines has connected his economic agenda to the needs of families, arguing that lower taxes and responsible government spending can make Texas a better place to live, work, and raise children. As Comptroller, he has also emphasized property tax relief and reducing government waste.

These issues matter to families because every dollar consumed by unnecessary government spending is a dollar that a Texas family cannot use for groceries, housing, education, childcare, or saving for the future.

That principle is already being demonstrated through Texas Education Freedom Accounts. Under Huffines, the Comptroller's office announced that more than 100,000 students had received funding through the program in its first year, with more than 100,000 additional students remaining on the waitlist.

Comptroller Huffines’ statement was clear and correct, “For too long, fatherhood and masculinity have been diminished and men have been pushed to the sidelines when it comes to their families and relationships. It’s time for a revolution of old ideas: restoring strong families, embracing the importance of masculinity, and encouraging men to lead their families with courage, responsibility, and faith.”

Defending the family means defending the institutions and values that allow children to flourish. That means standing for the unborn, defending parental rights, protecting children, supporting educational freedom, promoting marriage, and encouraging fathers to embrace the responsibilities that come with fatherhood.

Texas should aspire to be a place where getting married, having children, raising a family, owning a home, and providing for your children are celebrated rather than treated as burdens or outdated ideas.

Don Huffines has publicly described his priorities as centered on Jesus, family, and business, while his public record and current agenda emphasize taxpayers, education freedom, the sanctity of life, and creating an environment where families can thrive.

Every legislator should be following this lead. Strong families create a stronger Texas. When both a mother AND father are in the home children have the highest success rates. Whether it’s the Comptroller's Office, Governor’s Office, or any legislative office, families need to be put first.
