Texas Attorney General Joins Lawsuit Against Child “Sex Change Surgery” Giants

Attorney General Ken Paxton joined the Federal Trade Commission in a lawsuit against the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), an organization that has played a central role in promoting “gender-affirming care” for children. According to the lawsuit, WPATH allegedly misled parents, doctors, and insurers regarding the risks and benefits associated with puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and irreversible surgical procedures performed on minors. 

For years, Texas Family Project has warned that children who are confused should never receive experimental drugs, permanent sterilization, or life-altering surgeries. The growing number of detransitioners across the country has raised serious concerns about whether vulnerable children were adequately informed about the lifelong consequences of these interventions.

The allegations against WPATH are deeply troubling. The lawsuit contends WPATH promoted claims regarding the benefits of gender-transition procedures while failing to adequately disclose significant risks and side effects. Federal regulators and several states argue parents and medical professionals may have relied upon these representations when making critical medical decisions affecting children.

Attorney General Paxton has consistently fought to protect Texas children from harmful gender-transition procedures. Texas has already enacted laws prohibiting puberty blockers, hormone treatments, and surgeries for minors, and Paxton has aggressively enforced those protections through litigation and legal opinions. 

Texas Family Project believes these procedures constitute a grave threat to the health and well-being of children. Minors are often too young to fully understand the permanent consequences of infertility, loss of sexual function, altered physical development, and irreversible surgical interventions. Children who are struggling deserve help addressing underlying emotional and psychological challenges. The irreversible medical procedures often later lead to regret.

Recent actions by Attorney General Paxton have demonstrated a commitment to holding medical institutions accountable. Earlier this year, Paxton secured a landmark settlement involving Texas Children’s Hospital that included the creation of a detransition clinic and financial penalties related to allegations involving gender-transition interventions. 

The lawsuit against WPATH represents another important step toward transparency and accountability. Organizations that influence medical standards for children should be held to the highest level of scrutiny, particularly when their recommendations involve irreversible procedures with lifelong consequences.
