Governor Greg Abbott has officially announced several key priorities for the upcoming first Special Session of the 89th Texas Legislature, set to begin on July 21st. The items added to the call show strong support for Texas families.
Scrapping the STAAR Test: A Long-Overdue Reform
One of the biggest wins for Texas parents and students is the Governor’s inclusion of eliminating the burdensome STAAR test. For years, parents and educators have voiced concerns over how standardized testing has overwhelmed classrooms and stifled meaningful learning. Replacing this flawed system will allow local educators to focus more on actually teaching our children. Removing STAAR is a strong step for restoring sanity to our education system.
Protecting the Unborn: Reaffirming Texas’ Commitment to Life
Another critical addition is Governor Abbott’s continued commitment to protecting unborn children. Although Texas has already passed historic pro-life legislation, this move reminds Texans that the work is not finished. The goal now is to eliminate abortion completely from our state and close every loophole that threatens the sanctity of life. It’s time to make it clear that in Texas, every life is worth protecting. Meaningful legislation was filed during the regular session and would’ve solved this issue, but it was pushed to the side by moderate Republicans. We’re hopeful it will pass this time!
Defending Women’s Spaces: Standing Up for Truth and Safety
Governor Abbott also added protections of women’s spaces to the agenda. This issue has become increasingly urgent in today’s culture war! The radical left’s obsession with blurring gender lines has put women and girls in harm’s way. But not in Texas. Senator Mayes Middleton (R-Galveston) has championed strong legislation to protect women’s locker rooms and restrooms. Our team was proud to travel to Austin and testify in favor of his common-sense bill, but once again, moderate Republicans in the Texas House killed this legislation. We look forward to standing up for women and girls again during the special session to ensure it crosses the finish line. It’s time to restore reality and protect the basic rights and safety of Texas women!
Conclusion
Governor Abbott’s special session call is a breath of fresh air in an increasingly chaotic world. These items are solidly in line with the priorities of Texas families. Conservative lawmakers now have a golden opportunity to deliver results to strengthen the foundation of our state and ensure the Texas way of life continues to thrive.
